co-author: Krystian Kwieciński
Architects in their practice tend to formulate design rules which guide their designs. New design tools allow to formalize designers rules and automate the design process. This article presents differences between computer-aided design, parametric design and generative design. Moreover, the article explores motivation for employing such design techniques in an architectural design process and presents possibilities which they offer in everyday practice. Examples ranging from form-finding, through objective optimization up till participatory design are being presented. Beyond the standard tools that the architects use, these tools are automating design process allowing not only to optimize the workflow but primarily to extend the design possibilities.
